The story
It is the year 2000.
Sarah stands at a Greyhound station in Freedom, Pennsylvania, with an old suitcase, a ticket out of town, and no idea what comes next.
She leaves.
That single decision begins an extraordinary journey across America — through anonymous highways, unfamiliar cities, fleeting friendships, danger, heartbreak and unexpected acts of kindness — until the road brings her to New York City.
There, beneath the lights of Manhattan, Sarah begins to build the life she thought she was searching for. Deborah sees in her a future she cannot yet see for herself. And then there is Gabe — the man who changes the meaning of leaving, staying, and everything Sarah thought she understood about home.
But the road is not finished with her.
Wherever You Are is a sweeping original musical about love, memory, ambition and belonging — and about the choices that quietly determine the course of an entire life.
With a score that moves from intimate solo confession to soaring ensemble numbers and full-scale theatrical sequences, the musical crosses small-town America, turn-of-the-millennium New York and the vast emotional distance between running away and finally coming home.
At its heart is a simple question:

The novel’s portrait of a young woman crossing America in search of herself has been reimagined for the theatre — with a complete original score that carries Sarah from the Pennsylvania bus station to the lights of Manhattan and, finally, home.

The scenes
Every numbered song in the score has its own moment on stage — a place, an hour of the day, and what happens in it.
The street she grew up on
Sarah walks the length of the only street she has ever known, suitcase in hand. The church spire, the lamp posts, the town sign. Beyond the river, a skyline she has only ever imagined. She does not look back until the very last bar.
What she carries out of the house
Interior of a night bus. Sarah unfolds a letter that was never sent and reads it by the light of passing towns. The words belong to someone who stayed behind; the melody belongs to her.
A porch without her on it
The stage empties. Mist across the yard, a screen door left open, one chair. The ensemble sings the house's own memory of her while nobody stands in it.
One lit window, one decision
A single lamp above a ticket window. Sarah counts what she has, names a city out loud for the first time, and the depot clerk answers in the same key.
Rain on the glass
Telephone poles pass in rhythm. The company sings from the dark of the bus as the state line goes by unannounced — the first number where she sounds like she might not go back.
Arrival, and the size of it
The full company in motion around one still figure. Light falls in shafts through a vast concourse. Sarah stands with her suitcase and the city sings over her, not to her.
Warm light on cold stone
A brownstone door opens and amber light spills down worn steps. Deborah takes her measure in eight bars and lets her in anyway. The first duet of the show.
Recognition before understanding
Two people across a small table. Nothing is confessed. Everything is heard. Gabe sings the first half; Sarah answers with the same melody a fourth lower.
Empty boats at the dock
Before the meeting: still water, tied boats, bare trees. An instrumental-led chorus that gives the audience the room where the next song will happen.
Two people in one rowboat
The pivot of the first act. The boat drifts and stops drifting. One of them has known the other far longer than the other knows, and the song lets that arrive slowly, without an accusation in it.
The title song, sung apart
Two silhouettes on a rooftop with the whole lit city behind them, standing further apart than they were an hour ago. The title theme in full for the first time.
The road takes her back
The bus motif returns transposed. She is travelling again, but for the first time toward something rather than away from it.
Two cups, one still full
The quietest number in the score. Curtain light, a worn table, two cups. Sarah sings about ordinary mornings as if they were the rarest thing anyone had offered her.
The Atlantic, finally
Wind, granite, grey swell. The orchestration opens wide for the first time in the act; the ensemble sings from offstage as she reaches the water.
The road narrows
A two-lane road climbing between dark pines. The rhythm section thins out mile by mile until only a single line is left carrying her.
The woman who waited
Kathy on her porch, looking out at water she has watched for forty years. She sings the counter-argument of the whole musical: that staying is also a journey.
Headlights against the tree line
The road simply stops. Headlights hold a wall of pine. Everyone who has travelled with her sings from behind the light, and then does not follow her in.
A lantern between the trunks
One lantern, fog, a footpath. The most sparsely scored number in the show: voice, a single guitar, and the sound of her own footsteps kept in the pit.
Someone left a light on
A small cabin at the lake's edge with one window lit. The theme from Deborah's Door returns here, in a place where nobody expected it.
One star, low over the trees
The company returns as a chorus of light. A single star holds above the tree line and the whole show's harmonic language resolves upward for the first time.
The suitcase, finally opened
Sarah sets the suitcase down and opens it. What she carried the whole way is smaller than she feared and heavier than she admitted. The penultimate number, sung almost entirely alone.
Mist lifting off the water
Warm light, one chair, mist rising. Every theme in the score returns in miniature, and the title line is answered for the last time — not as a question about where, but about who.
